Amrit Udyan is a very beautiful garden that is  enriched with the flora and close view of nature. The garden has a variety of different species of flowers, plants and trees. It is also a part of Rashtrapati bhavan, new delhi, india. The garden is open for all the common people and visitors from the month of February to March as the sun starts shining bright with blooming flowers and the onset of spring. 

What is Amrit Udyan?

“Amrit Udyan was built between 1928-1929 during the Mughal Era”. Isir Edwin Lutyens designed the structure of the Amrit Udyan. The garden is located at the backyard of the Rashtrapati Bhawan and is open for Common Visitors from February to March during Amrit Mahautsav. The structure of the garden depicts the perfect blend of Mughal-British architecture.

Amrit Udyan Old Name

Amrit Udyan’s earlier name was “Mughal Garden” because it depicted the architectural design of the Mughals. However, as a part of 75 th independence, President Draupadi Murmu announced the new name of the Mughal Garden as Amrit Udyan. 

Amrit Udyan Ticket Price 

The Amrit Udyan Ticket Price for the visitors is free of cost. The Central Government provides a free entry for the common visitors, to come and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Garden.

Physical Structure of Amrit Udyan

The Garden of Amrit Udyan has three different sections:

Main Garden

It is the main garden of the place that consists of a Cross shaped channel with Six 12 feet, lotus shaped fountains at the crossings of this channel.

  • Rectangular garden
  • Central Lawn 
  • Seesham tree 
  • Birds of Rashtrapati Bhawan 
  • Bonsai garden 
  • Floral clock
  • Vertical garden 

The Long Garden 

The Long Garden is a long garden full of blooming flowers, especially roses. One can see varieties of Roses. It is located at the west side of the main garden and opens to the circular garden. There are varieties of more flowers like jasmine, Rhynchospermum, Tecoma Grandiflora, Bignonia Vanista, and China Orange trees. The Long Garden is a perfect spot for those who want to sit, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. 

Terrace Garden 

There are two elongated terrace gardens at an elevated height. The main centre of attraction of this garden is the two long fountains that fall inward, forming a well like structure.. There are varieties of plants and flowers growing in this region just like in the main garden.

Things to see in Amrit Udyan

One can see a great variety of distinctive and unique species of plants, trees and flowers:

  • Roses- There are a variety of roses and creepers that one could experience seeing. About 150 types of roses are there, like Adora, taj Mahal, sentimental, oklahoma, mrinalini, Belami and even more. Some species of roses are kept after the names of freedom fighters and big figures like Mother Teresa, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Abraham  Lincoln, . 
  • Other Flowers- One can also experience the view of other and unique flowers here. Some of them include: alyssum, daisy, bignonia vanista, pansy, and bulbous stem flowers. THe area makes the ambience very lively and fresh. It also becomes a good spot for taking pictures.
  • Plants- Great variety of different and unique plants like Daffodils, Asiatic lilies, hyacinths, tulips, doob grass and more.
  • Trees- The garden also consists of different varieties of trees, shrubs and herbs. In garden about 50 types of trees are present.
  • Mughal- British Architecture- The garden denotes a perfect blend of vintage and retro vibe architecture that was built during the mughal dynasty. The walls and buildings are carved elegantly showing an excellent combination of both British and mughal architecture and design. 
  • Birds and insects of Rashtrapati Bhawan- THere are many birds preserved in the garden that are now declining rapidly. 

Visiting Time of Amrit Udyan

The park opens for the public and common visitors only in the month of February to March during the Amrit Mahutsav. Monday remains closed due to maintenance reasons.

The Amrit Udyan is located in Rashtrapati BHawan that is located on Rajpath, Raisina Hill, New Delhi. One can easily reach the place by Bus, Metro, Cab or Personal Vehicle. 

  • Metro- The nearest Metro Station to reach Amrit Udyan is Patel Chowk or Central Secretariat. The garden is just a walking distance from these metros.
  • Car- It is mostly used because it is a perfect mode of transportation. One can easily come to visit the garden at their flexibility.
